May Day is officially know as the Early May Bank Holiday. It is held on the first Monday of May each year. May Day has been an official public holiday all across the UK since 1978 when provisions were made for it in the Banking and Financial Dealings Act. Prior to that time, it was a holiday only in Scotland. Domestic travel becomes very busy.

May Bank Holidays

Bank holidays were first introduced by the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, which designated four holidays in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and five in Scotland.
